I am 48 years old, a
typical Finnish man. In our family we are six persons. The others are my wife
Marjo, daughters Salla, Aija and Anni,
our only son Lauri. So, this is our team!
Salla, Aija, Lauri and me
are very eager to participate all possible orienteering games during the summer
time.
We moved to Kauhajoki in
1987, and I have been working as principal of Kauhajoki Senior High
School for Adults (Kauhajoen lukion aikuislinja) since 1988. I am a Mathematics
teacher as well. Since 1st August 1999 I have been working as director of
department of education, culture and leisure in Kauhajoki.
Besides those mentioned
above, I have been working with open university studies (Jyväskylä University),
telecommunication (Internet), distance learning (West Finland Alliance, Tampere
University of Technology). International relations are close to my heart. I am
the contact person to national CIMO office dealing with exchange teachers from
abroad to Kauhajoki town. I have also coordinated some exchange programmes for
Kauhajoki Senior High School and Kauhajoki Senior High School for Adults with
Barnsley College in England. Besides these I have links to SCI-LINK in the USA.
Since August 1998 I have
been a member of the Executive Board of Finnish Mathematics and Science
Tearhers Association for 3 years. I was responsible for international
relations. Since May 1999 I have been a member of the installation commission
of European Federation of Associations of Mathematics Teachers.
The state of Finland has
elected 27 pilot towns to a national progress programme in Mathematics and
Science. Kauhajoki is among these towns. The project actually came to an end in
2002, but the network still works.
